Austrian coaches took notice, especially since his time was better than high profile skiers including Austrian great Josef Strobl, Norwegian Olympic champ Kjetil Andre Aamodt, and Hahnenkamm winner Daron Rahlves of the USA. That all changed when the World Cup rolled into Flachau in January 1996 and one of the forerunners blistered the course, laying down a time that was better than all but 11 of the best GS skiers on the planet.
